What is a capacity factor?

The capacity factor is the ratio of actual electricity produced over a year to the maximum theoretically possible if the turbine ran at full rated power for every hour. A 5 kW turbine with a 25 % capacity factor produces the same annual energy as that turbine running flat-out for 25 % of the year.

Why might the coverage percentage exceed 100 %?

If the estimated annual energy exceeds your home consumption, the turbine theoretically produces more than you use. In practice you would export the surplus to the grid (subject to local regulations) or use battery storage. It does not mean you have unlimited free electricity.

What capacity factor should I use?

Small turbines at exposed coastal or hilltop sites may achieve 25โ€“35 %. Sheltered suburban sites are often 10โ€“20 %. Consult a local wind resource map or hire an assessor to measure wind at your actual site before buying.

Does this include the cost of buying and installing the turbine?

No. This tool estimates energy value only. Capital cost, installation, maintenance, and grid connection are separate and significant costs that must be factored into any financial analysis.
