This tool takes an annual CO₂ avoidance figure and divides it by three user-adjustable equivalence factors to produce those comparisons.
All three factors are editable because the right value varies significantly by country and context. The emissions per car depend on vehicle fuel efficiency and the distance driven; tree absorption rates vary by species, age, climate and land type; household electricity emissions depend on the national grid carbon intensity. Where do the default equivalence factors come from?
The default car factor (4.6 t CO₂/car/year) and home electricity factor (5.5 t CO₂/home/year) are based on commonly cited US EPA illustrative figures, which vary by model year and grid mix. The tree factor (0.021 t CO₂/tree/year) reflects a widely used average for a growing tree in temperate conditions. All three vary considerably in practice.
Why are the factors editable?
Using a single fixed global average for cars, trees or homes would be misleading for users in countries with very different vehicle fleets, grid mixes or forest types. Editable factors let you apply the values most relevant to your region or data source, making the comparisons more honest and locally meaningful.
Does CO₂ avoided mean the wind farm emits zero CO₂?
No. Wind turbines have a lifecycle carbon footprint (manufacturing, transport, maintenance). CO₂ avoided refers to the emissions displaced by replacing fossil-fuel generation with wind electricity. The net benefit is the avoided emissions minus the lifecycle emissions, which are much smaller.
Can I use this for other renewable energy types?
